Golden Boot Race – David Villa Doesn’t Care

With just one more match left in the regular season, the Golden Boot race is still on. I visited with NYCFC at training this week and got some time with captain, David Villa.

Villa is just one goal behind Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips in the race for the Golden Boot, but David Villa doesn’t seem to care.

“This is not important,” said Villa when asked about the Golden Boot. “It doesn’t matter…in the final”. Villa with 21 goals is second only to BWP with 22 goals. The two have been right on each other’s heels for quite some time now.

The only goal on his mind is to lead his team to a second place spot in the East to avoid the knockout round.

“If we are inside second place, we can shoot for this. But now the most important (thing) is to get 3 points.” It’s pretty clear that the NYCFC captain is most concerned about his team’s performance and winning this weekend.

NYCFC takes on Columbus Crew in the final match of the 2016 MLS season this Sunday at 4 pm at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC has never beaten Columbus in their brief history together.
